For my Educational Media Theory course at the University of Wisconsin Platteville, I was asked to participate in a Twitter chat or thread. A tweet is only 140 characters long and you can use a hashtag (#) to have your tweet connected to the conversation. These Twitter chats usually start off with the host asking a question and then others can either respond with an answer or ask their own question as long as it doesn’t take to much attention away from the host. This is my first time participating in one of these and I would like to elaborate on my experience. I feel like twitter is a good place to start looking for things or people to add to your PLN (Personal Learning Network). I decided to join the twitter chat labeled #7thchat because I thought it was about ideas on how to engage 7th graders in the classroom. Honestly, I was having a hard time figuring out how to engage in the chat that I decided to ask a question using #7thchat. I asked the question “What are some ways 7th graders can use technology in the classroom?”. The chat was supposed to last form 10 P.M. to 11 P.M. on Tuesday, December 4th, and the way it looked only two of us had tweeted. My tweet was the only one that asked a question and the other tweet was about “How to Become a Chartered Public Accountant“. I feel like because it is late at night on a school night many would not like to be part of the chat, but I was very excited to learn about how to get technology in my classroom if I do eventually teach 7th graders. I am also including 2 screenshots of one during and one after to show how inactive this chat was. I’m hoping in the future when I try one of these chats again more people will be active!
